Ladies, start your engines. Registration opens February 20 for the LWGA’s 2018 Golfing for a Cure, the signature women’s charity tournament of the year for the LWGA and The Landings. The event is Tuesday, April 24, with a rain date of Tuesday, May 1, and will benefit cancer research at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah.
“This year, for the first time, the funds raised will be donated to Mercer University, where we will continue to support the summer scholars program and cancer research, including the study of a marker that may help with early detection of pancreatic cancer,” said tournament Chair Maryce Cunningham.
All of Mercer’s research is done at its Savannah Medical College, which means all the funds raised remain in our community.
“Golfing for a Cure has raised $800,000 over 14 years,’’ said Cunningham. “This accomplishment is a source of great pride shared by LWGA members and our tournament sponsors, particularly our presenting sponsor Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Southeast Coastal Properties.”
The 2017 tournament drew more than 250 LWGA golfers, required three courses and netted $65,000. The scramble format continues this year with a choice of tees and 9 am shotgun start, followed by a 1 pm luncheon at Plantation. LWGA members may also opt for the luncheon only.
However, anyone can help the cause: you may sponsor a hole, purchase tickets for the fabulous general and art raffles and donate raffle items. Restaurant and salon certificates, getaways, golf equipment, lessons and attire are popular, with an emphasis on high quality items versus quantity.
And, you may purchase a Ribbon Tribute in honor of someone living with or surviving cancer or in memory of family members or friends who lost their lives to cancer. It’s an incredible feeling to walk into Plantation on tournament day and see these symbols of hope and remembrance hanging in the ballroom. It’s also a big testament to the energy and commitment of the volunteers who run this big event.
So, LWGA members, round up your foursome and register with four individual player checks made out to Mercer University and one entry card enclosed with your invitation and available in the Plantation Club Pro Shop. If you’re a single or twosome, just sign up on the Plantation LWGA bulletin board, and you’ll be matched with a team. Registration begins in the Plantation Ballroom at the conclusion of the February 20 LWGA General Meeting and Luncheon.
