2018 ‘Golfing for a Cure’ Recipient Announcement

An LWGA ad hoc committee, headed by Gail Wickstrom, was formed to research a new recipient of the 2018 ‘Golfing for a Cure’ donation. Other committee members were Vicki McElreath, Maryce Cunningham, Nancy Lieb, and Lori Redding

LWGA’s “Golfing for a Cure” has contributed over $800,000 to fund cancer research and equipment, supporting cancer patients, and finding a cure for this dreaded disease. This accomplishment is a source of great pride that we all share.  In recent years, our funds have supported the work of the Anderson Cancer Center at Memorial University Medical Center.

The recent announcement of the purchase of Memorial by Hospital Corporation of America creates a for-profit entity that will greatly benefit the financial future of our local hospital.  However, it also necessitates the dissolution of the charitable foundation that received our contributions.

This change presents LWGA with a unique opportunity to re-evaluate our 2018 “Golfing for a Cure” event in many positive and forward-thinking ways.

The committee members met with representatives of Mercer University School of Medicine, including the President of Mercer University, William Underwood, and with St. Joseph Candler Foundation, both of which are non-profits doing important and innovative cancer research.  The committee proposed – and the LWGA board approved – that the LWGA enter into a one-year cooperative effort with Mercer, where we will continue to support summer scholars and cancer research, including the study of a marker that may help with early detection of pancreatic cancer. All of Mercer’s research is done at the Savannah Medical School and all the funds will stay here in Savannah

Maryce Cunningham and Anne Warhola, 2018 tournament chairs, and their committee are already at work, energized by this change and dedicated to our on-going mission:  Supporting local cancer research and treatment.

We hope that you will continue to be excited about our tournament and the good work that our funds have generated.

The ‘Golfing for a Cure’ tournament will be held on April 24, 2018
